HESI Testing Policy
Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) and Associate of Occupational Science in Ultrasound Technologist (AOS-UT) program applicants will be required to take and pass the HESI entrance examination in addition to passing the standardized entrance exam.
- Program applicants must receive a passing score on the HESI exam (scores will be rounded to the nearest whole number).
- Program applicants may use HESI exam scores from another college/institution. HESI exam scores are valid and may be used to meet entrance exam requirements if the results were obtained within three (3) years of the enrollment date. HESI exam scores taken at American Career College are valid for three (3) years.
Applicants who fail the HESI exam may reattempt according to the following schedule:
- Applicants who do not achieve a passing score on the HESI exam must wait a minimum of 7 calendar days before retaking the exam.
- If the applicant does not achieve a passing score on the second attempt on the HESI exam, he/she must wait 30 daysfrom the date of the last attempt to take the HESI a third time.
- If applicant fails all three attempts, the applicant can begin the process after a minimum of 1 year from the first attempt.
- Students may combine section scores from multiple HESI attempts to create a composite score, provided the exams were taken within a 90-day period. If a student retakes only select sections of the exam, they are allotted a maximum of two hours for those sections. Retaking any portion of the exam is considered a full retake within our retake policy.
- Applicants who are not accepted for the current class can elect to be placed in the applicant pool for up to the next two class starts, ranked according to their initial combined test score.
- If an applicant is not accepted within three successive applicant pools for three consecutive class starts, the application will be denied.

Applicants may satisfy the admissions testing requirement through one of the following pathways:

Applicants who achieve a minimum cumulative HESI score of 70% across all required sections, including Science, will be considered to have met the admissions testing requirement.
Option 2: Alternate Admission Requirement
Applicants who do not achieve a minimum cumulative score of 70% when all sections are included may still satisfy the admissions testing requirement if they meet both of the following criteria:
- Achieve a minimum cumulative HESI score of 75% when the Science section is excluded from the calculation.
- Achieve a minimum score of 30% on the Anatomy & Physiology (A&P) portion of the Science section.
Applicants admitted under this alternate pathway will be required to successfully complete an approved Anatomy & Physiology remediation or preparatory learning program prior to the program start date.
