American Career College–Orange County’s Physical Therapist Assistant program recently began a partnership with Braille Institute Orange County. The current cohorts held a workshop for the Braille Institute students titled “Memory, Motivation & Balance.” This one-day workshop focused on physical and cognitive health through the mind body connection and physical health and wellness.
“This has been a wonderful opportunity for the students to serve the community and we thoroughly enjoyed working with our neighbors at the Braille Institute,” ACC Physical Therapist Assistant Program Director Dr. Jennifer Whitney, PT, DPT, KEMG, said.
The Braille Institute holds many classes for the community in an effort to empower students with low vision, and these have been the first with ACC students.
Braille Institute Manager of Education Programs Nancy Hendrickson invited the PTA program to develop the first workshop in June for their students. Due to the collaboration's success, the Braille Institute asked the PTA program to develop a workshop series on Fridays this Fall quarter. All workshops are supervised by Dr. Whitney and faculty, including Professors Sally Matter and Adeel Rizvi, and curriculum is approved jointly by ACC-OC and Ms. Hendrickson prior to delivery.
"This collaboration between students at ACC and students of the Braille Institute in Anaheim is wonderful." Ms. Hendrickson shared. As part of the rehabilitation/continuum of care for those who have been diagnosed with low vision, Braille Institute's free programs and services offers practical skills for daily living, instilling confidence, building self esteem, empowering students to live fulfilling lives. "We are grateful to ACC for this their support and partnership, helping us reach our mission. I have been with Braille Institute for more than 25 years and have an appreciation for rehabilitation sciences and services, which truly benefit our students.”
