Nicholas C. grew up in South Central Los Angeles, where higher education often seemed out of reach.
"Many in my community didn’t see college as a viable option, and simply navigating through daily challenges felt like a monumental task," he recalled.
Despite these challenges, Nicholas was determined to build a better future for himself and his family. As a single father of three, balancing parenthood with academics was difficult.
"There were times when the weight of these responsibilities threatened to derail my dreams," Nicholas admitted.
However, the support of his children motivated him to continue pursuing his goals. Nicholas initially worked in business administration but felt compelled to make a more direct impact on people's lives. His experience as a phlebotomist at St. Francis Medical Center reinforced this decision.
"My decision to transition from business to healthcare was driven by a desire to make a tangible difference in people’s lives," he explained. "I witnessed the profound impact of compassionate care, inspiring me to pursue a career in respiratory therapy."
Nicholas chose American Career College for his education because of its strong healthcare programs and supportive community.
"While I may not come from a family of medical professionals, my passion for healthcare and dedication to serving others has always been deeply ingrained in who I am," he said.
As an African-American male, Nicholas values cultural competence in healthcare.
"My background allows me to connect with patients from diverse backgrounds on a deeper level, fostering trust and understanding in the therapeutic relationship," he noted.
Looking ahead, Nicholas is committed to advocating for patients’ rights and promoting health equity in respiratory care.
"By addressing systemic barriers and championing policies that prioritize inclusivity, I hope to contribute to a healthcare system that serves all individuals, regardless of background or circumstance," he said.
