Itzel H. stood proudly as she graduated from American Career College as a medical assistant, but her journey is far from over.
She’s already enrolled in her next challenge, training to become a surgical technologist. With determination, resilience, and a love for hands-on learning, Itzel’s story is a testament to the power of setting goals and pushing forward, no matter what.
Growing up in Los Angeles, Itzel's career path wasn’t always aimed at healthcare. Initially studying to be a sign language interpreter, she soon found herself seeking something more fast-paced and impactful. The desire to make a difference in people’s lives and embrace hands-on learning drew her to ACC. Passing by the college frequently while living in K-Town, Itzel was inspired by ACC's interactive approach to learning and felt that it was the right fit for her.
“It was an eye-opener,” she shared. “The way ACC’s instructors are so hands-on — it's unlike anything I'd seen.”
While becoming a medical assistant was a stepping stone, it quickly became clear to Itzel that her heart belonged in healthcare. Despite having no family in the medical field, she was eager to try it out, hoping to give back to her community in a meaningful way. She tackled every challenge head-on, from learning clinical skills to building confidence in performing injections and handling blood draws. These experiences gave her a deeper respect for the impact that healthcare professionals have on people's lives.
“My goal was to keep going and push myself,” she explained. “I didn't miss a day, kept perfect attendance, and aimed for honor roll. Each goal gave me the motivation to keep going.”
Itzel’s hard work and commitment led her to graduate with honors, perfect attendance, and even the title of ACC Ambassador. As an ambassador, she volunteered extensively, seeing firsthand how her work could make a difference beyond the classroom. From community events to peer support, she took every opportunity to give back, viewing it as both a privilege and a way to grow.
Already on her way to achieving her next goal, Itzel is now enrolled in ACC’s Surgical Tech program. Excited to further her skills, she is looking forward to taking her passion for healthcare to the next level. This time next year, Itzel plans to be on stage again, celebrating her graduation as a Surgical Technologist and feeling one step closer to her ultimate career dreams.
Reflecting on her journey, Itzel believes in the transformative power of ACC’s programs and wants future students to feel confident in their choices. Her advice to new students is to embrace the journey, connect with classmates, and never underestimate the value of hands-on experience.
“ACC was life-changing,” she says proudly. “If you have the opportunity to enter the medical field, I highly recommend it. The journey isn’t always easy, but the rewards are worth it.”
