Strength, Sacrifice, and Success: How One Mother Is Shaping Her Future

"Why did you do this? You could be with your kids, with your friends at a birthday party." This inner dialogue is something Francine G., a student in American Career College’s ADN program, faced more than once during her accelerated journey. But her answer was always clear: "Knowing the end goal is to achieve what you wanted and be successful…is actually what kept me going."

From Comfort Zone to the Unknown

Francine’s journey into healthcare began over a decade ago when she enrolled in ACC’s Surgical Tech program. "I’ve been a surgical tech for 11 years and have been very successful," Francine shared. Despite her accomplishments, she felt the pull to take the next step in her career — nursing. "My first degree from ACC was a success. What makes me think my second one's not going to be a success?"

Returning to ACC for her ADN program, Francine found herself facing a new challenge: balancing the rigorous demands of an accelerated program with her role as a mother to two young daughters. "It is very fast paced," she admitted. "Doable if you're willing to sacrifice what it takes to get through the program."

Sacrifices Today for a Better Tomorrow

Francine's journey hasn't been without its sacrifices. "Easter just passed, and my kids were like, 'Come hang out with us and play with us.' I'm like, 'I can't, I have a big exam the next day.'" Yet, she remains steadfast, knowing these short-term sacrifices are paving the way for a brighter future. "This will be extremely worth it," she said. "I’m showing my children what it takes to be strong and get through something hard."

Her daughters, aged 7 and 12, are watching and learning. "They can't wait to see me walk across the stage," Francine said with pride. "Life is not easy, but I’m teaching them that anything is possible if you fight for it."

Support Systems and Overcoming Challenges

The road hasn’t always been smooth. Francine recalled moments of self-doubt. "There’s quite a few times that you're looking in the mirror, thinking, 'Why did you do this?'" But ACC’s support system has been a lifeline. "…always been my ear and my little conscience on my shoulder."

Francine also highlighted the hands-on experiences in ACC’s simulation labs. "The OB birthing Sim doll actually pushes out a baby…It helps put you ahead because you know what you're hearing and looking for before you even get to the patient chart." These moments, though sometimes nerve-wracking, provide invaluable lessons. One standout experience? "I accidentally gave the wrong medication during a simulation triggered an anaphylactic reaction," Francine admitted. "Thank God it happened here and not in real life."

Looking Ahead: Impact and Inspiration

As graduation approaches, Francine reflects on her journey and the impact she hopes to make in healthcare. "I’m going in as an OR nurse, and my job already has plans for me." Her workplace not only held a position for her but also covered her first assistant training, showcasing their confidence in her abilities.

For Francine, the path she’s chosen is about more than personal success. It’s about inspiring the next generation. Her advice to future students? "Don’t give up. When you think it’s too much, remember you made this choice for a reason. The staff here is great — they’ll coach you through all your stresses."
