For Rosie D., or as her students fondly call her, "Miss Rosie," nursing is more than a profession — it’s a calling. As the Associate Director of Nursing (ADON) at American Career College’s Orange County campus in Anaheim, Rosie brings an unparalleled passion to her role, shaping the lives of future healthcare professionals.
Rosie's path to ACC began in 2018, starting as a part-time instructor before moving into her current leadership role. Her background spans elementary education and a dynamic nursing career in ER and trauma settings.
"I thought management was all about sitting in a cubicle, viewing people as numbers. But at ACC, it’s so much more than that. We know our students, their stories, and their struggles. Here, management is about connection and collaboration," she said.
At ACC, Rosie’s mission is clear: to transform uncertainty into confidence. Nursing students often enter her program unaware of the challenges ahead, but Rosie thrives on guiding them through their journey.
"Seeing students go from saying, ‘I don’t know if I can do this,’ to standing tall at graduation is the best part of my job. They come in scared but leave ready to change lives," Rosie said.
Her mentorship extends beyond academics. Whether it's providing personal tutoring, addressing family challenges, or simply being a listening ear, Rosie ensures her students know they’re never alone.
One of the biggest misconceptions Rosie addresses is that nursing is easy — a glamorous career akin to what’s portrayed on TV dramas.
"People don’t see the emotional, physical, and mental toll of nursing. It’s not just saving lives but also navigating the complexities of patient care. That’s something we prepare our students for every day. We celebrate every success, but we also reflect on where we can improve. Our goal is for every student to leave feeling capable and empowered."
Rosie highlights the unique diversity at ACC, not just among the student body but within the staff. This diversity enriches the learning environment and prepares students for real-world healthcare settings.
"Healthcare is about meeting people where they are, respecting their cultures and backgrounds. That’s something we teach and live by every day."
To foster this inclusive culture, ACC hosts numerous events celebrating its campus community, creating a sense of community that feels more like family.
Rosie offers heartfelt advice to those considering a career in healthcare education:
"Teaching is as challenging as nursing. You’ll make mistakes, but those moments will lead to growth—for you and your students. The most rewarding experiences often come from the students who challenge you the most because it’s often the first time someone truly believes in them."
The joy of seeing her students succeed keeps her grounded and inspired. Whether it’s watching them walk across the graduation stage or hearing them say, “Miss Rosie, you were right,” she knows she’s making a lasting impact.
"ACC isn’t just a job for me; it’s a community where I belong. If you’re passionate about shaping the next generation of nurses, ACC is the place to be."
