Five respiratory therapy students and two instructors from ACC Ontario were selected by the American Lung Association to volunteer at their annual Southern California Asthma Management Program (SCAMP) earlier this summer. SCAMP Camps is a weeklong overnight summer camp for kids between the ages of 8-13 living with asthma. Most summer camps cannot accept children with asthma due to the severity of their condition, which is why SCAMP Camp is so important. SCAMP Camp provides children with moderate to severe asthma the unique opportunity to attend summer camp and learn how to better self-manage their asthma.
ACC’s RT students were offered the opportunity to volunteer at the SCAMP Camp after they raised some $6,000 for the American Lung Association earlier this year. SCAMP Camp is one of many services that the American Lung Association offers those affected by asthma. ACC’s RT students are looking forward to partnering with the ALA with other local education programs including open airways for schools and the fight for air walk in November. Volunteer work helps students become involved in the local community and ensures that they truly stand out after graduation.
