Arkivia Jones came to American Career College to pursue a career in massage therapy. As a student, she has juggled a number of life challenges but that has not deterred her from passionate dedication to her education. That caught the attention of the scholarship selection committee at the California Association of Private Postsecondary Schools (CAPPS), who selected Jones for the Bonnie Manley Memorial Scholarship. Campus leaders surprised her with the announcement that she will be receiving $3,000 towards her tuition, courtesy of CAPPS.
“I’m shocked – this is a little overwhelming,” said a tearful Jones when she learned of the scholarship. “This is a huge blessing and I am very grateful. Thank you so much.”
“We were all thrilled to learn that Arkivia was selected for this scholarship,” said Lani Townsend, Executive Director of ACC Los Angeles. “She is a dedicated student in spite of facing a number of obstacles in her family and personal life – she is truly an inspiration.”
Jones is currently in her fourth module of the massage therapy program, which she anticipates completing in February.
“I am grateful to American Career College for many things, especially for the staff who nominated me for this scholarship. Thank you, thank you, thank you,” Jones said.
The Bonnie Manley Memorial Scholarshipis one of several honorary memorial scholarships that CAPPS gives each year. Former CAPPS President Bonnie Manley’s career in the cosmetology industry spanned four decades. She was a licensed cosmetologist and educator, and owned and operated three cosmetology schools in the San Diego area. Manley served two three-year terms on the NACCAS Commission from 1991 to 1996 and was elected the first female Chair of the Board of NACCAS in 1993. She was strongly committed to maintaining ethical standards and integrity in business and organizational management. Bonnie Manley passed away in 2004.
American Career College supports the CAPPS scholarship program by underwriting the Norma Ford memorial scholarship, which provides $3,000 to a deserving student studying in the health care field.
