Darren V., a former Navy diesel mechanic turned physical therapist assistant student shares his motivations and experiences as he navigates school and life.

Darren’s journey began with a personal experience during his high school years as an athlete. Sidelined by injuries, he underwent physical therapy and witnessed firsthand the transformative power it held. Reflecting on his own rehab, Darren realized the profound impact a PTA can have on someone's life.

"I want to be that positive influence for somebody, be there for them when they're feeling low," he said.

One of the best things about physical therapy, he emphasized, was the balance between professional rapport and the tangible benefits of the profession. The importance of building trust and connection with patients while also finding fulfillment in witnessing their progress was a huge draw for him.

"Just seeing someone come in and seeing them walk out completely different... that's very rewarding," Darren said.

Transitioning from a military background to academia presents its own set of challenges. Darren admitted to feeling overwhelmed by the sheer amount of information to absorb but emphasized the importance of passion and dedication in overcoming obstacles and balancing his life.

As a father juggling familial responsibilities alongside academic pursuits, time management is paramount for Darren. Early mornings, balanced schedules, and a love for coffee help him navigate the demands of his day. Despite the challenges, Darren finds solace and gratitude in his journey, crediting his military background for instilling discipline and resilience.

Darren envisions himself in outpatient care, particularly in sports-related rehabilitation, drawing from his own experiences as an athlete. He envisions guiding individuals through their recovery journeys, helping them regain functionality and pursue their passions. For Darren, physical therapy is not merely a job but a vocation, requiring genuine care and commitment to each patient's well-being.

"It's not just a job to get a paycheck... It's not just a 9-5,” he said. “It's none of that. It's you actually have to be engaged."
