Sometimes, the path to finding the perfect career is less of a straight line and more like navigating a labyrinth. For American Career College student Garrett P., a passion for biology and a love for soccer led to an unexpected yet fulfilling destination: becoming a physical therapist assistant.
"I just always wanted to be a biologist," Garrett recalled, reflecting on his early days of academic pursuit at Cal Poly Pomona. "I love the environment, environmentalism." Armed with a degree in biology, the natural trajectory seemed to point towards a career in environmental science. However, as fate would have it, life had other plans.
It was a serendipitous encounter with the world of physical therapy that altered Garrett's course.
"I shadowed a PT for a day, and it was like the best of both worlds," he said. "I get my interest in the body, biology, but I also love talking to people, getting to know them. It's a perfect fit."
The decision wasn't merely about emulating the actions of others; it was about embodying a profession that resonated deeply with him.
"I kind of wanted to be them, knowing that they're able to help people, knowing that they have the knowledge," Garrett mused. "I just loved how they talked, how they knew about the body and how it worked."
For Garrett, the allure of physical therapy is not just in its scientific intricacies but in the profound impact it can have on individuals.
"I think it's nice knowing that I'm there, not helping people just physically, but even mentally," he said. "You learn so much about their world and what's out there while also making someone feel better."
As he works his way through the accelerated program at ACC, Garrett remains open-minded, eagerly exploring the diverse options within physical therapy.
"I'm just really excited to see what I find for myself," he shared. "I'm open-minded to hospital work, neuro, pediatrics. I just want to discover."
As Garrett continues their journey, he offered some sage advice to the next generation of students: "Just really enjoy the experience. Be open-minded and ready to immerse yourself. Don't put yourself in a box. Allow your mind to be free and find different pathways."
The journey has not been without its challenges, but Garrett finds solace in the supportive community at ACC.
"There were times where I'm like, 'This is a lot. I don't know if I'll be able to do this,'" he admitted. "But with the teachers and everybody here, they're so supportive. You almost feel you're going to let them down if you quit."
Reflecting on his experience, Garrett emphasized the importance of inclusion and acceptance.
"I'm part of the LGBTQ community, and I feel accepted," he said. "I just love the way everybody makes me feel. It doesn't matter what you did before; it doesn't matter what you've done. If it feels right for you, just go do it. You'll never finish something if you don't start, so I'm excited that I got to start this.
