In advance of next month’s Special Olympics World Games in Los Angeles, American Career College’s physical therapy students and faculty showcased their volunteerism and spirit by serving athletes at the Special Olympics Southern California Summer Games on June 13.
American Career College Physical Therapy Assistant students and faculty volunteered their services to athletes alongside students from several doctorate programs in the area including USC, CSU Long Beach and SDSU.
Healthy Athletes offered free health screenings to Special Olympics athletes at the event including a specific physical therapy initiative that our students and faculty volunteered for: FUNfitness. A division of Healthy Athletes, FUNfitness provided free musculoskeletal screens for the athletes to ensure they remain safe and healthy in their competitive endeavors and our PTA students collected vital measurements on flexibility, balance, physical endurance and strength. Each athlete was then provided education and home programs by the licensed physical therapists and physical therapist assistants.
“It was a great day to support the amazing athletes in the Special Olympics and we look forward to helping them at the World Games in July,” ACC PTA Program Director Dr. Jennifer Whitney said.
