At ACC-Los Angeles, Alma Perez took her entire dental assisting class on their first day for some hands-on training.
Students volunteered at the MEND Dental Clinic in the San Fernando Valley, performing for the first time many of the same tasks they will have mastered by graduation.
"They were very excited," Perez said. "Some of them took X-rays, some assisted the hygienist, others took impressions for appliances, and some of them assisted in placing tooth color fillings or assisting in root canal treatment."
The MEND (Meet Each Need with Dignity) Center runs the low-cost clinic for patients who do not have Denti-Cal or private insurance. The Pacoima-based clinic is run completely by volunteers, and more than 100 volunteer professionals participate each month. In 2015, MEND hosted more than 4,700 patient visits.
"We encourage our students to volunteer so they can gain experience in a working environment right away," Perez said.
