Dr. Janice Lwin was named Master Teacher of the Year by the Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES) for her work in the physical therapist assistant program at American Career College-Orange County.
Lwin was nominated for the award by ACC-Orange County executive director Debbie Jones, who said she was proud to see Lwin be honored at the ABHES conference this March in Savannah, Georgia.
“Everyone agreed wholeheartedly that Dr. Lwin has done such an amazing job in the few years she’s been with us here at American Career College,” Jones said. "It was an easy choice for us and for our campus.”
Jones said she was amazed at her program director's fortitude, noting how much time and energy Lwin had put into the physical therapy assistant program, including many long days on campus and Lwin's even longer drive home.
"It took two years to get the program back on track but she just showed a new definition of dedication to the students and to the educational process as a whole," Jones said. "She did this all while driving from San Diego and the fact that she still rallied every day to come back and make a difference. We’re all just so proud of her!”
Lwin said she was honored by her award and thankful for all the support from her fellow PTA faculty members. Most of all, Lwin said, she was thankful her students allowed her to be their teacher and help achieve their goals.
“I think one of the greatest things about being a teacher is when you get that a-ha moment from your students,” she said. “When that light bulb goes off in their eyes and they go ‘Oh, I get it!’ I think that probably has to be one of the most rewarding moments for any teacher.”
