Surgical technology and radiography students at American Career College-Los Angeles got a chance to learn important skills used in the operating room this November when they practiced taking X-rays during a simulated surgery.
ACC-Los Angeles surgical tech instructors Jimmy Tang and David McCreight joined ACC-LA radiography instructor Robert Medellin to help students understand their program's roles and responsibilities in the operating room before heading out into their clinical settings.
“The students and I had a blast doing this,” Medellin said. “Jimmy, David and I all shared our experiences with the students and gave helpful tips for when that time comes for them to actually perform in the field.”
The surgical techs and radiologic technologists worked together, Medellin said, to the properly drape and position radiographic equipment in a sterile field.
“It’s an essential part of the well-being and safety of that patient in surgery,” Medellin added. “It’s wonderful we got to share that with the students now, so they are better prepared for working in the operating room.”
