For Sivmorn H., the journey to becoming an optical technician didn’t start with lenses or prescriptions — it started with a love for physics. A former STEM student at LACC, Sivmorn discovered her passion while taking Physics 101. That spark for quantum theory grew into a deeper interest in the world of optics, which eventually led her to American Career College’s Optical Technician program in Los Angeles.
After being waitlisted at other schools and spending some time in marketing at a tech startup, she decided it was time to take a more direct step toward her goal. A quick Google search brought up ACC.
“I started reading into it... this is a perfect time to really get a feel [for] what [being an] optical technician is about and see where I want to take this career forward,” Sivmorn shared.
Once enrolled, Sivmorn quickly found a supportive, hands-on learning environment where she could thrive.
“So far it’s amazing. I love every minute of it,” she said. Her instructors has been a major part of that experience. “[My instructor] makes it fun to come to class… the environment and the learning environment that you get here is absolutely amazing.”
Sivmorn emphasized how much she appreciates the care and attention she receives from her instructor. That close connection has been matched by the camaraderie she’s found with her classmates.
“She makes us feel like she’s [our] mom. It doesn’t feel like a professor or a teacher here — she makes us feel well taken care of,” she said. “We bonded as a class. Everyone did so well.”
When asked about her favorite part of ACC, Sivmorn lights up: “My favorite part is doing the Kahoot for the reviews. [Our instructor] makes it fun — I think that’s the best part of the class.”
ACC has also helped Sivmorn prepare for her future career in more ways than one.
“I love the well-organized modules and extra practice I get in class to reinforce my knowledge,” she said. “With the extra workshop prep on ACC Ready, it also helps with my professional pursuits in the business side of the optical field.”
Ultimately, Sivmorn’s goal goes beyond just helping people see better — she wants them to feel better too.
“I want to make people feel good with what they’re purchasing. Especially growing up, having glasses wasn’t… people tease you, right? So, I want to make it a fashion statement,” she said. “Glasses are awesome and they’re in style. My number one impact I want to have on my patient is to really listen to their needs and try my best to show off their style in a way that their spectacles bring out their personality.”
To those considering a future in optics or a program like ACC’s, Sivmorn offers this advice: “Start researching what your strengths and weaknesses are before coming here. Even doing a little research — what program you like to be in — and especially having your interests apply to your career… I think it’s great. Just remember, it’s not really work if you enjoy what you do.”
