Starting with uncertainty and transitioning into a fulfilling career path, Daniel D’s dental assisting story is one of overcoming obstacles and finding purpose in a program that offered the hands-on training he craved.
"I was honestly in another college, and I did not know what I wanted to do," Daniel recalled. His first experiences in a university setting were marked by confusion and a lack of direction. The majors offered didn’t resonate with him, and he felt lost.
"The majors that they offered... wasn't diverse... there was not that many majors that I was really interested in anyway." This led him to seek alternatives that could provide a clearer path and more immediate engagement with practical skills.
His search brought him to ACC and their 10-month dental assisting program. The program's structure, which emphasized hands-on training and direct patient care, appealed to Daniel’s desire for a fast-paced and dynamic learning environment.
"I looked into ACC and... I saw that they had a 10-month program with a lot of hands-on training... I get to do fillings, crowns and X-rays," he explains. This practical approach allowed him to quickly immerse himself in the field and develop a passion for dentistry.
Despite his enthusiasm, Daniel’s journey was not without its challenges. "When I first started here... I was really scared because I was wondering, is this really for me?" he admitted.
The first module was particularly tough, and passing it was a close call. However, his dedication paid off as he continued to excel in later modules.
"I didn't let that stop me,” he said, “eventually everything will be just a piece of cake."
Daniel’s perseverance was tested further when he moved from Ontario to Los Angeles, adding a significant commute to his daily routine. This transition took a toll on his mental health and stress levels, but he remained committed to his education. "It was really challenging for me because... the drive there was really long... but I didn't let that stop me." Support from his instructors and the resources at ACC played a crucial role in helping him navigate these difficulties. "My instructor... would always give me advice... ACC staff is here to help you."
Now, as he prepares for his externship, Daniel reflects on the impact of his journey. The program has not only provided him with the technical skills needed for a career in dental assisting but also instilled in him a sense of confidence and direction.
"I feel really happy that I'm starting really soon,” he said. “I'm really determined to make a difference in this world and that's starting with making patients smile."
