At a recent career fair at American Career College-Ontario, we asked healthcare recruiters to share their professional insights about what job seekers should avoid during interviews and when starting a new position. Their advice offers valuable guidance for anyone preparing to enter the healthcare field through our healthcare diploma or healthcare degree programs.
Lycett Urias, a human resources supervisor with SuperCare Health, emphasized the importance of maintaining professional boundaries in the workplace even when the environment feels welcoming.
"You can get comfortable to an extent, but be aware that it's a career you're trying to make for yourself," Urias said. "You want to make a good first impression, and just continue that reputation in a sense, especially if you're interested in growing."
For students completing American Career College's healthcare programs, understanding workplace etiquette can be just as important as clinical skills when starting a new position.
Cynthia Arroyo, a district manager at America's Best Contact & Eyeglasses, highlighted how many candidates underestimate the importance of proper interview preparation and professional appearance.
"You would be surprised how many people walk in not prepared," she said.
Common interview mistakes to avoid include:
West Coast Dental marketing field representative Kim Vura emphasized that strong communication abilities and teamwork are crucial qualities for healthcare professionals.
"We don't want introverts. We want extraverts. We want people who know dentistry. We want people that understand the patient's need. We want them to understand the doctor's needs. We want them to make sure they can get along with everyone on the team," Vura said.
She also expressed confidence in ACC graduates' preparation: "But you know what? If you went to American Career College, I bet you know how to assist. I bet you know how to have compassion. I bet you know how to work with others."
Beyond interview preparation, successful healthcare professionals understand the importance of workplace etiquette when beginning a new position:
Always dress professionally, even if the workplace has a casual dress code. For most healthcare positions, business professional attire (dress pants/skirt, button-up shirt/blouse, closed-toe dress shoes) is appropriate. Avoid jeans, t-shirts, and athletic shoes.
Plan to arrive 10-15 minutes before your scheduled interview time. This shows punctuality while giving you time to complete any paperwork and collect your thoughts.
Be ready to discuss your relevant education and training, any clinical experience you have, your understanding of patient care principles, how you handle stressful situations, and examples of your teamwork abilities.
Bring multiple copies of your resume, a list of references, any relevant certifications or licenses, a portfolio of your work if applicable, a notepad and pen, and prepared questions about the position and organization.
Follow this checklist to prepare for your healthcare career:
The first 90 days in a new healthcare position are critical for establishing your professional reputation. Consider these strategies:
