Optics students from the American Career College-Los Angeles and Long Beach campuses recently volunteered to help community members see better.
At the annual Lion’s Club Friends in Sight event in Long Beach on Oct. 8, six ACC-LA and seven ACC-Long Beach optics students joined program directors Patty Estrada and Hector Navarette to assist community members with no-cost eye exams and fittings for free recycled glasses to those in need.
“Our ACC students received valuable experience and some utilized their bilingual skills at the Lion’s Club Event,” ACC-LA Program Director Patty Estrada shared. “The Lions’ Club members and the recipients themselves were thrilled that we were there to help.”
Each ACC student volunteered a minimum of four hours but some stayed the entire day, working at different stations throughout the event. ACC students performed preliminary eye tests, pulled eyewear, fitted each patient, made adjustments to customize the fit and performed minor repairs at the dispensing station. Some patients had to have their glasses ordered and our ACC optics students aided in frame selection and taking appropriate measurements to order the glasses.
Thanks to our students for giving back to the communities they serve!
