ACC Student Spotlight: Katee Fielding

March 18, 2017

A longtime administrative assistant, Katee Fielding was tired of doing uninspiring work at minimum-wage jobs.

Fielding’s boyfriend had found a job that he liked and paid well. Why couldn’t she? Fielding was ready to make a change.

“We've been together for 10 years and he's always had the same career. For me, it's been jumping around and I've never been able to say that I'm actually happy with what I'm doing,” she said. “(Nursing) was something that I've been interested in for a long time and I just never really took the step. I've been a million other things, but I've never had a career.”

Now a vocational nursing student at American Career College-Ontario, Fielding said she’s excited about the chance to do something that interests her and that may better support her family, financially and beyond.

“I chose nursing specifically because I've never been grossed out by medical stuff and I know a few nurses personally and they love their jobs,” Fielding said. “Plus, my dad is ill — I don't want to start crying — he doesn't have any specific disease, but he has a lot of nerve damage so he's in pain constantly. I think being able to help him in any way that I could kind of geared me towards the medical field.”

After graduation, Fielding would like to pursue her bachelor of science in nursing and become a registered nurse specializing in wound care. Eventually, she wants to earn her master's in nursing and possibly become a nurse practitioner.

But first, she has to graduate from ACC-Ontario.

Fielding calls the 12-month VN program “very difficult, but extremely rewarding.” She admitted to going home after school and crying due to stress and workload, but with the help of her classmates and teachers, she's confident she'll get through it fine. The friends she’s made in the program and the results she’s seeing in class have made long hours in the classroom or studying easier.

"I've never been more proud of myself and that's something that I was never able to say before," Fielding said. "Before coming here and doing really well, I've never really been able to say that I felt that at all, but being here and really being interested in something that I'm doing and being able to say that I love coming to school and getting good grades on tests and being able to understand a concept that I wouldn't understand in the beginning and just having that 'Ah-ha' moment, that makes me feel a lot of pride," she said.

"ACC is a great school. The VN program is really hard but once you get it and you understand, you just feel so good about being able to work towards something that's not only going to benefit you, but other people."
