ACC Long Beach Student Honored With Sue Fleming Memorial Scholarship

September 22, 2013

Vivian Berumen is a hardworking, dedicated student in the medical assistant program at the Long Beach campus of American Career College.

“As a single mother I want to be a role model for my daughter and show her that coming to school every day and focusing does pay off,” Berumen said. “I’ve managed to make it to school on time, usually even an hour early just to study.”

That dedication has been rewarded by the California Association of Private Postsecondary Schools (CAPPS), who selected Berumen for the Sue Fleming Memorial Scholarship. Campus leaders surprised her with the announcement that she will be receiving $3000 towards her tuition, courtesy of CAPPS.

“Ecstatic does not even begin to describe what I felt when I was informed that I was selected to represent my school. It feels great to know that my hard work, dedication, and determination are being recognized. In continuing to focus what is important to me will enable me to continue to grow and learn,” Berumen said.

“Vivian is certainly worthy of this and I am thrilled that she was picked for this scholarship,” said ACC Long Beach Campus Dean Irma Blanco. “She is a dedicated student juggling a lot of responsibilities as a mother – a true role model for others and a delight to have on campus.”

“My desire is to immerse myself in learning in a field that I believe can benefit from a hard working individual,” Berumen said. “The notion of helping others always gives me a sense of fulfillment, and the field of medical assisting gives me the opportunity to do just that every day.” The scholarship is one of several honorary memorial scholarships that CAPPS give each year. American Career College supports the CAPPS scholarship program by underwriting the Norma Ford memorial scholarship, which provides $3,000 to a deserving student studying in the health care field.

This one is in honor of Sue Fleming, who began her career in Allied Health in 1986 when she enrolled in a medical assisting certificate program at Western Career College. She became an instructor at the school and then department chair. After receiving her Bachelor of Science degree from National University, Sue rose through the Western Career College ranks, first as dean of education, then as executive director of the Sacramento Campus. In 2004, Sue was promoted to operations director for the Central Valley campuses. Susan Marie Fleming passed away unexpectedly in 2005.
