The Latest on ACC’s Massage Therapy Program

By American Career College’s Ontario Massage Therapy Director, Janet Miller.

In the past few months, the Massage Therapy program at American Career College’s Ontario campus has been consistently involved in philanthropic events in the community. In addition, we have formed close bonds with employers and hospitals in the Inland Empire area. Check out what the past year had in store for us, and what’s to come! Keep in mind that we have many upcoming opportunities for our Massage Therapy students to sharpen their skills, while having fun doing so.

February brought about campus excitement as the Massage Therapy Department held a teddy bear fundraiser for hospitalized children. Students and staff, as well as friends and family, experienced the massage skills of our students, and in return, those who received a massage brought in a teddy bear to help raise the spirits of children.  The event brought in a grand total of 428 bears. Then, the fun continued, as the students visited hospitals and gave bears to many children. The children were ecstatic and could not stop smiling!

In March, for the fourth consecutive year, our students had the opportunity to practice massage on over 200 people at the Arrowhead Regional Medical Center’s 5K Run/Walk.  This gave our students the opportunity to practice their sports massage training while contributing to a great cause.

May did not just bring flowers, but it also brought about our third annual Nurses Week. Our Massage Therapy program celebrated Nurses Week by visiting several hospitals, where students were invited to work their massage magic on the nurses, doctors, and staff.

On June 28, 2012, the students and faculty of the Massage Therapy program at American Career College’s Ontario campus had a very exciting day! Massage Envy Spa, an employer that ACC is fortunate to work with, visited the ACC-Ontario campus to interview 19 of our graduates and our nearly-graduated students.  It was a wonderful opportunity for both graduates and current students who interviewed. Along with interviewing, Chris Binkley, Regional Developer for Massage Envy Spa’s Inland Empire region, shared his experience as an employer by conducting a mini seminar as to what it is like to work for Massage Envy Spa, and what most employers are looking for when hiring.

In August of this coming year, we will be attending the Chino Relay for Life event for the third year in a row.  Last year, a team made up of all five Massage Therapy classes participated in shifts throughout the day and night, taking care of the participants.  We raised over $900 for the event. Our goal this year is to raise at least $1000.

We are rounding up the year with our fifth consecutive year at Arrowhead Regional Medical Center’s health fair.  This year, over 3,000 people may be attending, and we are looking forward to the task of meeting and greeting as many as possible, as well as inviting them to a relaxing dry table massage.

The faculty and students in ACC’s Massage Therapy program truly enjoy what they do, and we are determined to stay involved in the community, continuing to change as many lives as we can.
